Week 4: The Dreaded Weekly Email

I HAVE BEEN HERE ONE WHOLE MONTH. Que en el mundo?!?! (What in the
world?! It´s not actually something that makes sense here, but I still
say it…)
My Spanish is still a struggle, obviously (just read above). But uhh
I at least think I´m starting to understand quite a bit more. Who
knows how much I truly am understanding…
Some of my favorite things I learned this week:1 Cor 13. Hebrews 13
and Mormon 9 - God is the same yesterday and today... Forever. It is
only us and our faith that changes. Also. I truly learned the
importance of believing in others and OURSELVES. Why is it always
easier to believe in others??
We took group pictures yesterday. Don’t worry Hoffman fam, I really
carried our name well and was the most mature one in the group. I of
course didn’t knee anyone or poke anyone during the picture. And I
most definitely didn’t pull the, “You have something on your shirt!”
and then flick their nose… I really fit in with all the 18 and 19 year
olds.

Things I love:
1. My morning teacher. He makes me think I’m actually learning
Spanish. He could just be super nice to help give me a much needed
confidence boost – but I’ll take it either way.

2. When my bunk mate gets packages and SHARES with all of us. Ummm who
knew I loved symphony bars so much?! Gracias Mama Fullmer.

3. Children. Last week we went to the temple (as we do every
Wednesday) and the bus driver brought his 4 year old son. It was
probably the first time since I’ve been here that I was able to
communicate with someone. We just shot “pistoles” and made creepy
faces and noises at each other the whole time. The fact that I’m the
only missionary over 20 and yet I’m stillll the only one going ham
playing with the child says a lot about my maturity level. 1 Cor 13:11
has been quoted a few too many times to me this week (put away
childish things). OH MY GOSH.  We use scriptures as insults these
days, WHAT IS MY LIFE. Welp, the kid loved me. When I went to get off
the bus he grabbed my hand and would not let go, his dad had to pry
his hands off me. I finally made a native friend. HALLELUJAH.

Things I am learning to love:
1. How ratchet my style is. Holy I look at pictures of myself and
welp! I just embrace the fact that it’ll probably just get worse from
here on out.

2. The siempres and the nuncas. Aka the always and the nevers. There
is no in between when it comes to El baño. I’m talking about bathroom
problems again, lo siento. This problem (the siempres) is the worst
for my companion… And since we spend literally 24/7 together I get to
escort her to and from quite a bit. Don´t worry, I´ve learned to
entertain myself with hand puppets over the stall doors.

3. The fact that I’ve ALREADY turned into one of those missionaries
who´s world revolves around food. I WAS WARNED THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN.
It’s happened all too soon. Thank the heavens for the vending machine
on our floor that feeds this new problem of mine.
Love you allllll. Thanks for all the emails!
